Adoption Process

  • Applicants may submit an application online by clicking the link below. Questions included preferences, rider experience, and the potential adoptee’s care, boarding and training. Veterinarian and personal references are required.

  • Once an application is submitted the equine team at Akindale will review and process the application. Processing time often depends on accessibility of references. Applicants should notify references that they will be contacted. Applicants are notified of their eligibility to adopt via e-mail.

Please remember to check your SPAM folder for status e-mails!

  • Once approved, a member of Akindale’s team will call you to discuss the right equine match for you. Adoptable horses are listed on the website with available photographs, video(s) and detailed descriptions.

While your preference of horse will be taken into consideration, it often happens that the best match is an unexpected one. The team at Akindale will help steer you towards the horse that suits your riding level, chosen discipline, and longterm goals.

  • After or an initial assessment call/email, you can make an appointment to view the horse(s) that match your desires. If you are not a professional and work with a trainer (highly encouraged!), you trainer will be included in the assessment process.

  • Once we have mutually agreed on horse selection, you must sign our Placement Agreement and schedule payment of adoption fee.

Please read the Placement Agreement carefully. It is designed to protect both you and the horse. Please note, Akindale requires that your horse is stabled where other horses live or that you have a companion animal for the horse you are adopting. Please also read and agree to our Return Agreement.

Payments will only be accepted in the form of a certified check, money order, cash or credit card.

  • Once a commitment is made, you have seven days to pick up or transport the horse. A daily rate is charged for board beyond this grace period. A health certificate is required by law for horses that are shipping with a commercial hauler and would be crossing state lines.

    Transport Options (if needed):

    River Card Farm: (914) 582-2739

    Rodney Markgraf: (516) 238-9390description

  • Akindale requires a yearly check up on your horse. Your horse must be up to date on vaccines including E/W Encephalitis, Tetanus, Rabies, WNV, Rhino, and any required in the horses stabled location. We also require a photo of the horse confirming the horse is in health. When contact by our Office Manager each year, please fill out the yearly evaluation form.

PLEASE NOTE: Adoption is on a first come serve, first serve basis. We do not hold horses for any client prior to completion of the Adoption Agreement and a down payment.
