ABOUT: Carmen Amaya has a special connection to Akindale, she was bred right here on the farm. Akindale's founder, John Hettinger, believed strongly in standing behind the horses he bred, with the promise that they would always have a place to return to if they needed one.

When Carmen's racing career didn't turn out to be particularly successful, that promise brought her back home to Akindale. Today, she is a permanent member of our sanctuary, spending her days peacefully in the same place where her story began.

Carmen also carries a very special name. She was named after the legendary Spanish Romani flamenco dancer and singer Carmen Amaya, remembered as one of the most celebrated flamenco performers of her time.

From being born at Akindale to racing and ultimately returning home, Carmen's story has come full circle. She now enjoys the retirement John always envisioned for his horses; a safe place to land and a home for life.
