ABOUT: Drinkwater has a special connection to Akindale that goes all the way back to the beginning. Bred by Akindale founder John Hettinger, Drinkwater was born into the Akindale family before heading off to begin his racing career.

As a two-year-old, Drinkwater broke his maiden at Belmont Park, earning his first career victory in a Maiden Special Weight. One of the highlights of his career came at Saratoga in August 2005, when he won an allowance race during the prestigious summer meet.

After several years on the racetrack, Drinkwater retired from racing in 2010 and came home to Akindale. Here, he was able to leave racing behind and settle into a much quieter way of life.

Today, Drinkwater is one of our longtime sanctuary residents, spending his days outside with his herd and enjoying the retirement he earned. Having a horse who was bred by John return home and remain with us all these years later makes Drinkwater an especially meaningful part of Akindale’s history.
