ABOUT: Last Malachi, affectionately known as Kai, came to Akindale in 2020 with quite a few quirks and a personality all his own. We welcomed him into our retraining program, where he began making wonderful progress. With time, patience, and consistency, Kai was thriving, and we truly felt he had turned a corner. We were excited about his future and eventually found him an adoptive home.

Unfortunately, things didn't go quite as planned. After his rider experienced a couple of falls, the decision was made for Kai to return to New York and back into our care.

Once home, we began working with him again, hoping to pick up where we had left off. However, Kai continued to have his good days and bad days, and his behavior became increasingly unpredictable. Despite our efforts, we realized that perhaps what Kai needed most wasn't more training, but simply some time to himself.

We decided to give him a break and turn him out with one of our sanctuary herds. What happened next made the decision easy. Kai was happier than we had ever seen him. He settled into herd life beautifully, enjoying the freedom, companionship, and routine of living out in the fields.

Sometimes, the best thing we can do for a horse is listen to what they're telling us. For Kai, that meant stepping away from expectations and allowing him to simply be a horse.

Today, Kai is a permanent member of our sanctuary, living life on his own terms. While his journey may not have ended where we originally imagined, seeing him so happy and content reminds us that success looks different for every horse.
