ABOUT: Louie came to Akindale in 2023 after spending many years as a lesson horse at several well-known barns in the area. Throughout his career, he helped countless riders learn, grow, and develop their skills in the saddle. Like so many lesson horses, Louie spent much of his life taking care of others.

Unfortunately, when Louie could no longer be ridden, his future became uncertain. After years of faithfully serving the equestrian community, Louie was essentially dumped at Akindale when no one was willing to take responsibility for his retirement. What began as a temporary favor to someone at the farm ultimately left us responsible for providing him with the lifelong care he deserved.

Although Akindale is dedicated to the aftercare of retired Thoroughbreds, we simply couldn't turn our backs on Louie. He had spent his life serving people, and we felt he deserved the same kindness and commitment in return.

Today, Louie has a permanent home at Akindale, where he no longer has to carry riders, teach lessons, or earn his keep. His only job now is to enjoy his retirement.

Louie's story is an important reminder of the responsibility we have to the horses who give so much of themselves throughout their lives. Whether they were successful racehorses, beloved lesson horses, or anything in between, they all deserve dignity, compassion, and a safe place to grow old.
