ABOUT: Saratoga Jack has quite the story, both on and off the racetrack! Born in 2013, this Pennsylvania-bred gelding enjoyed a long and successful racing career, competing until the age of nine. Over 47 starts, he earned more than $378,000 and even captured the 2016 Crowd Pleaser Stakes.

What makes Jack's story even more special is the meaning behind his name. He was named in honor of his owner Jean Mahoney's late husband, Jack, making him much more than just a racehorse to his connections.

After retiring sound from racing in 2022, Saratoga Jack began preparing for his second career. He successfully transitioned into dressage and even competed at the Retired Racehorse Project's Thoroughbred Makeover. Unfortunately, he was later diagnosed with kissing spine, a condition affecting the vertebrae in his back. Rather than continue pursuing a riding career, his owner made the decision to give him the retirement he deserved.

Saratoga Jack arrived at Akindale in 2023, where he joined our sanctuary herd and began his next chapter.

One of our favorite parts of Jack's story is that his owner has never forgotten about him. She still makes the trip to visit him every year, and it's always wonderful to see their bond. We love seeing owners who care so deeply about their horses, not just during their racing careers or when they're competing, but long after their working days are over.

Saratoga Jack may have left the racetrack and show ring behind, but he certainly hasn't been forgotten. We're honored to provide him with a peaceful retirement and a place to call home for the rest of his life.
