ABOUT: Tiergan came to us in 2022 with a right front suspensory injury that required extensive rehabilitation. We took our time with his recovery, giving him every opportunity to heal before gradually bringing him back into work. After a lengthy rehabilitation process, Tiergan was doing well, and we were excited for him to begin his second career.

He was eventually adopted and placed into a riding program, but unfortunately, things didn't go quite as planned. After returning to regular work, Tiergan came up lame, and further veterinary evaluations revealed a bone chip in his left hind ankle. Surgery would be necessary for him to have a chance at returning to riding soundness, so the decision was made to bring him back to Akindale and allow him to enjoy life in our sanctuary.

And if you ask Tiergan, he seems perfectly happy with that arrangement!

These days, Tiergan has taken on the role of boss man in his field, and he certainly doesn't let anyone forget who's in charge. He's full of personality, knows exactly what he wants, and has no problem keeping his herd mates in line. But don't let his tough-guy attitude fool you! While he may rule the field, Tiergan is an absolute sweetheart when it comes to people. He loves attention and is always happy to have someone stop by to give him some love and scratches. It's hard to believe the same horse who bosses everyone around in the field can be such a softie when people are involved!

Tiergan's story is a reminder that even with extensive rehabilitation and the best intentions, not every retired racehorse will go on to a second career. That's why our sanctuary is such an important part of what we do. Horses like Tiergan will always have a safe place to call home, regardless of their ability to be ridden.
