ABOUT: Ziggy came to Akindale in 2015 through the Equine Comeback Challenge, which had originally received her through the New York Take the Lead program. Unlike many of our Thoroughbreds, Ziggy never had a racing career due to a suspensory injury.
After arriving at Akindale, Ziggy was eventually adopted into a lesson program. Unfortunately, she wasn't particularly happy with having so many different riders on and off her back and began developing some unwanted habits. It became clear that the lesson horse lifestyle just wasn't for her, and she was returned to Akindale.
Once back with us, we decided to give Ziggy another chance at retraining, and it turned out to be surprisingly easy! With one consistent rider, she was a completely different horse. She was happy, willing, and an absolute pleasure to work with. In fact, Ziggy became one of the best trail horses you could ask for. She would happily hack out for hours, enjoying every minute of exploring the trails.
Ziggy was eventually adopted again, and this time she was thriving in her new home. Unfortunately, despite how well things were going, she began experiencing navicular issues that made it difficult for her to remain sound in regular work. Ultimately, the decision was made that retirement would be in her best interest, and she returned to Akindale once again.
Today, Ziggy enjoys a well-deserved retirement in our sanctuary alongside her best friend, another chestnut mare named Frosted Julips. The two have become wonderful companions, and it's always nice to see them enjoying life together.
Her story is a great reminder that sometimes a horse isn't difficult or unwilling; they simply haven't found the right job or environment. Once Ziggy found what made her happy, she truly shined.
Although her riding days are behind her, we're grateful to be able to give Ziggy the permanent home and lifelong care she deserves.
